Al-Mohafaza Sport Complex Competition
Project type
Design Competition - Master Plan + Architecture
Date
2012-2013
Location
Damascus, Syria.
In early 2012, I had the opportunity to participate with my uncle, Arch. Akram Khouri, in a competition to design a sports complex — my first architectural competition.
The concept was rooted in creating two-tiered connecting routes: one designed for high-density encounters and another allowing moments of avoidance. The built environment was used as a tool to orient movement and frame social interactions.
The project introduced two main squares that foster social and cultural exchange — between local and international athletes on one hand, and the surrounding community on the other. Architecturally, we employed modern tensile structures to convey a sense of progress and dynamism, while the tent-like forms evoked a connection to traditional desert life.
Despite the risks and challenges posed by the war in Syria, we completed and submitted our proposal — and were awarded third prize.
